Winter Sky - Death Ground, Frame 1

After-Action Report

by Brooke, JG26

This was a scenario that ran in the multiplayer on-line air-combat simulation Aces High.

I was in 1/JG26 "Schlageter".

Map

A map of the battle area for us. Our home base was a25 in sector 6.13.

Mission 1

1/JG26 taking off in our FW 190D-9's into the cloudy winter sky.  From left to right:  wil3ur, me (Brooke), EAce, NghtFire, Redtail7, IrishOne (our GL), Ditto, and 1ijac.  EAce and NghtFire are German -- it was great to fly with them and to hear German on our group radio channel.  t=00:02

We climbed to 30k and headed toward a109 to look for enemies.

We ran into a flight of P-38's near a109.  From left to right:  twoshay, dropem, me, and Dan6.  The other guys were from another group.  The others in 1/JG26 are nearby, too, just off to the right of the picture.  t=0:20

I take off the tail of a P-38J in a fight at treetop level.  t=0:26

EAce (ahead of me) flames a P-38.  Ditto is up above in the ack.  t=0:27

I blow the wing and tail off of a P-38L.  t=0:28

I fought for a while more, then headed northeast with EAce once the fighting died down to go refuel.  As we egressed, EAce spotted some trailing bogies.

The bogies resolve themselves into a flight of Typhoons that are chasing us down.  I hit WEP and went into a shallow dive.  EAce stayed just a bit higher and was behind me, and they got him.  I thought that I was next, but they just barely didn't have enough speed to chase me down, or decided to break off rather than get dragged all the way to a61, which is what I headed for.  t=0:33

Mission 2

I refueled and then worked to join back up with the rest of JG26.  I joined them a102/v103 area.  I made a pass at a high Spit 14 or two, and then joined a fight down on the deck with various aircraft types.

I make a pass on a couple of Spitfire 14's to clear IrishOne.  t=1:07

A flight of higher P-51's comes in, and I work to keep enough altitude to spar with some that are keeping their altitude.  t=1:12

After fighting with the P-51's a bit, a high Tempest came in and dove at me.  At that time, JG26 had cleaned up some of the P-51's and was heading to a102 to rearm.  I raced for the field, having to evade a couple of times as the Tempest chased me down.  The Tempest stuck to me tenaciously, and I worked to evade long enough for ack or some other fighter to get him, but . . .

He shot me down.  IrishOne shot him down shortly thereafter, though, avenging me! :)  t=1:17

Mission 3

After coming back up, I worked to join up with the rest of JG26.  I had a little trouble finding them in the a40 area.  I was maintaining CAP at 30k for a while in case higher enemies entered the area, but it stayed clear, and I eventually went down lower and joined the low fight.  I spotted some Tempests called out low near the Rhine but went after some higher enemies who showed up.

I blow the wing off a P-51 in the fighting near a40.  t=2:14

Ditto calls out a Spitfire 14 on my tail right after the P-51 goes down.  I immediately go evasive.  The Spit put a few rounds into me, but my sturdy D9 stays together.  I went into a dive and jinked, and he broke off.

After that fighting, Ditto and I were low on fuel and went to rearm.  Long before our destination field, Ditto ran out of fuel and had just enough altitude to glide to the field.  Doing a deadstick isn't too hard, but he had to do a deadstick landing and manage to coast to a rearm pad that had buildings on the approach side of it.  I called out the location of the pad, and our CO (KillrDan) sat at the pad a moment so that Ditto could get his bearings.

Ditto touches down deadstick and heads toward the re-arm pad that KillrDan just vacated.  Ditto made it to the buildings, clipped his wing on a building (losing half his left wing), and made it onto the rearm pad.  After getting fuel, he took off with half a wing and made it to our home base for a fresh plane.  Wow!  Way to go, Ditto! <S>  t=2:32

Mission 4

I take off and head back to the a40 area, where the ground war was raging.

I chase down and kill a Typhoon that was trying to get to an allied field.  t=2:49

Back near a40, I find a Storch spotting our tanks.  He does his best to evade, but I rake it from stem to stern with gunfire.  The poor Storch explodes into bits.

Shortly after this, "cease fire" was called, and I landed at base.

Conclusion

I got five kills (two P-38's, one P-51, one Typhoon, and one Storch).  I died once.

Overall, 1/JG26 got 25 kills.  Very nice!
