Winter Sky - Death Ground, Frame 3

After-Action Report
4/28/2012
by Brooke, JG26

This was a scenario that ran in the multiplayer on-line air-combat simulation Aces High.

I was in 1/JG26 "Schlageter".

Map

A map of the battle area for us. Our home base was a25 in sector 6.13.

Mission 1

1/JG26 taking off in our mighty FW 190D-9's.  From left to right:  Flench, me (Brooke), 1ijac, IrishOne (our GL), Ditto, and Redtail7.  t=0:0

After take off, we were to patrol in sector 4.11.  On the way, however, v103 and a102 were flashing, so we redirected there.

We came across lots of Typhoons, Tempests, and Spitfire 14's heading back south from the v102 area. t=0:20

I was at the front and called out that I was blowing through the enemy formation and continuing forward.  A couple of the guys followed me, and several others engaged.  That wasn't clear to me at first, so I continued ahead, but once it was clear that other folks had started a melee behind us, I circled back.

I blew half the wing off one of hte Spit 14's with a fortunate snapshot.  t=0:25

The half-winged Spitfire dove to escape, and I followed, but ended up in compressibility.  Here, I thought I might smack into the ground before being able to pull out, but managed to pull out at about 7k.

Ditto and Redtail7 pounced on the wounded Spitfire.  Ditto got some hits on him and Red blew it to smitherines before I could reel it back in.  Nice work, guys! <S>  t=0:26

After this, there weren't any more enemy aircraft around, so we climbed NE for altitude.  About this time, IrishOne had discoed, and I took over as replacement GL.  After getting altitude, we resumed patrol in 4.11.  There were calls of enemy fighters sighted near our position, so we headed for the action and got into a fight with Spitfire 14's and P-38's.

After the fight descended, I chased one Spitfire 14 right to the deck and got some hits on him (and also many hits on the ground, as can be seen in the picture).  Someone else finished him off before I did, though, giving me an assist.  t=0:49

Mission 2

After this fight, we were low on fuel, so we ran to a102 and re-fueled there.  After climbing back out, we headed to the a40 area, where there were calls of enemies.  There, we got into a fight with Spitfire 14's and P-47's.

I blew the wing off a Spit 14 with a fortunate high-deflection shot.  t=1:13

Diving in to help with a couple of P-47's.  Redtail7, Devil505, and Ditto are down there, slugging it out.  t=1:14

I made some passes and missed some shots on P-47's.  Then a high Spit 14 dove on me and chased me out.  Devil505 called for assistance about then, and I headed for his P-47 pursuer to see if I could clear Devil, but the angle wasn't useful, then the Spit chasing me angled off for Devil.  Arg.  My flying toward him was thus harmful, not a help.

A look back from my cockpit.  The Spit that was chasing me has done a pass on Devil505, smoking his engine.  The P-47 that was chasing him is still on him as well.  1ijac is back there following me about to try for a run on the Spitfire.  t=1:15

I got some altitude, then went back in.  I didn't see anything up higher when calls came in of Typhoons on the deck.

I dove in on the Typhoons and Spitfires on the deck.  1ijac and Ditto are down there making some attack runs as well.  t=1:30

I went for a Spitfire following 1ijac, and the Spit reversed.  I went straight at him for a what I thought would be a high-angle shot, but he cranked it around tightly and headed straight at me firing.

The Spitfire 14 and I go head to head.  I land hits on his wing, and then -- smash! -- we collide.

I get out with a damaged radiator, and his wing snaps off, either from the collision or cannon hits or both.  t=1:21

With my radiator damaged, I immediately headed out of the area, first trying for a25, but then realizing that I wouldn't make it, headed toward a39.  I thought I would end up ditching with the runway in sight, but I barely made it.

Mission 3

After coming back up from a25 with a fresh plane, I joined back up with the rest of JG26 over a40.  We didn't see anything around a40, and there were no reports of enemy aircraft anywhere.  The a43 area had been flashing for a while (which is where all the ground action was), so I called for us to head over there.  We went over there, and there weren't any enemies in the air there either.  Then, a134 started flashing (well in our territory), so we figured of course that it was allied bombers.  We headed in that direction.  As we got closer in, because of thick clouds and that the bombers were probably going to be on the deck, I had our guys spread out a lot and go down to about 10-15k.  Ditto on the far left flank spotted a lone B-25 down low in thick clouds, and the rest of us vectored in on him.

I put the finishing touches on the lone B-26, but Ditto rightly gets the kill.  It turns out to be my friend Tudza.  Arg.  t=2:17

After that, we refueled at a44 and went back to patrol over a43.  There wasn't anything up high or much being called out on radio, but we noticed AAA going off, and I dove in knowing there had to be some enemy aircraft then.

I took a shot at a P-38J and missed.  He was carrying bombs.  He got shot down before I got any more shots at him, as the area was swarming down low with Luftwaffe fighters.  t=2:53

I blow the wing off a hapless P-51D that all of the remaining JG26 pilots are chasing like hounds after a fox.  In the picture from left to right:  Ditto, me, mosca1 (in his Bf 109K-4), and 1ijac.  t=2:56

Things were quiet for a while, and we started to look around for ground vehicles to spot and possibly attack.  Then two P-38's came zooming in from altitude.  I pointed my nose into them, then yo yo'ed back around to make a run back across the city with one of them in pursuit.  I thought that there were lots of Luftwaffe planes around over the city, but I flew for a while and saw only a guy here and there.  Mosca1 went after one, but got nailed by the second.  Ditto got his engine shot out, and called out on the radio for help, but I didn't see him right away and instead saw one of the P-38's chasing 1ijac.

I broke the P-38 off 1ijac and went for a large deflection shot on him, but missed.  t=2:58

1ijac reversed after this.  I zoomed out a bit, climbing, then reversed, too, but as I was coming back around, I saw 1i go in.

I was in a diving turn to get on the trailing P-38 (which was following Ace8) when "cease fire" was called. t=2:59

Conclusion

I got three kills (two Spit 14's and one P-51D) and three assists (two Spit 14's and a B-26).

Overall, 1/JG26 got 12 kills.
