Big Week, Frame 4

After-Action Report
6/24/2017
by Brooke, GL, I/JG 3

This was a scenario that ran in the multiplayer on-line air-combat simulation Aces High.

I/JG 3 consisted of me (Brooke), Pipz, and Oboe.  Participation in frame 4 was very light.

Mission 1

American bombers inbound!  JG 3 took off and got into position for an intercept, coordinated by our beloved and expert Commander Serenity.

I/JG 3 taking off.  gerBlnTz and Clu and others are on runway about to roll as well.

Bombers spotted.  There is a lead group and a trailing group.  t=0:51

I hassle a P-47D-11.  Devil5O5 and fdski are down there starting their attack runs.

I split S in.  MAKAYLA, Lefty, and Safari99 have done their attack runs.

Pouring the cannon rounds into the one I picked out.  t=0:52

An external view as the horizontal stabilizer comes off.  The wing is next.

A look behind me as I exit my attack run.  Lots of other folks out there attacking, too:  BW1stpar, BWDelta, Satan99, oboe, DRAGUN, Devil5O5, horble, and loki.

A second attack run.  I was able to climb out in front of bombers and come back for another run.  Pipz and Solomo are down there on a run as well.

I take the wing off another B-17.  t=0:54

Video of attacks on these first two B-17's.

Split S'ing down onto the bombers again on their return from target after being expertly positioned by Commander Serenity.

I love the gondolas on the 109G.  My cannon rounds tear off the B-17's wing and catches his plane on fire.  t=1:07

Diving out, the rounds from angry bombers gunners chasing me down.

After this one, I landed and then manned a gun at a field where one of our pilots was coming in under attack.  A bunch of us were in guns and repelled the American fighters that didn't want to stay over our field bristling with manned guns.

Mission 2

Bombers inbound on their mission #2 (the dots near my right wingtip in picture).  Luftwaffe groups are very close together here and going in.  JoeJoe, Snibbo, Clu, Dantoo, BWDelta, Gnat, BW1stpar are also on the way in.  Serenity and Puller have done another excellent job scouting and getting us into position.

Split S'ing in.  Bueller is down there on his attack run.  t=1:51

I'm going for the lead bomber on this one.  Crater has done an attack run as well.  I decided not to go for the guy with a single bomber left.  I note where the bomber gunners are firing -- not at me.  I think they are focused on someone else.

Pouring the rounds into the lead bomber.

Diving through, going after the lead bomber still.  Very good thing for me that the gunners have lots of other Luftwaffe planes to shoot at.  nosara and Bueller are down there after their runs.

Putting the final hits into the leader.  fdski is ahead after his run.

I dive out.  Several gunners let loose at me as I show up under the bomber stream, but I'm gaining distance in a big hurry and jinking.  Other Luftwaffe fighters are getting ready to pounce:  Oboe, Gnat, Pipz, BWDelta.

I climbed in front of the bombers, got chased away, climbed some more, got chased way, climbed some more, came back, and got to the bombers again.

Spotting the bombers.  I'm about to attack this group, but then I see a straggling formation behind this one.

Blasting one of the straggling B-17's (which turns out to be flown by Killyjim).  The group in the previous picture is visible as the cloud of dots ahead in this picture.  t=1:59

After that, I disengaged and got positioned for the bombers coming back from target.

Spotting the bombers coming back -- positioned again expertly by Serenity with awesome scouting by Serenity and Puller.  Pipz is up here, and Solomo and Devil5O5 are inbound as well.  t=2:20

Split S'ing onto the returning bombers.  Lots of Luftwaffe fighters are on their way in:  JoeJoe, Clu, Dantoo, Ditto, horble, Snibbo, Morfiend, Loki, BW1stpar, BWDelta.

I see a P-47D-11 as I was diving on bombers and go for him instead, to help clear the way.  I miss my shot on him, but did cause him to maneuver out of the way.

I tangled with a couple of escorts briefly, ended up a bit away from bombers, and had to chase them to catch up.

Chasing bombers.  Lots of Luftwaffe fighters are getting close to attack runs.  Up ahead are:  MAKAYLA, Loki, Bueller, Ditto, Morfiend, Dantoo, Devil5O5, JoeJoe, Snibbo, BWDelta, and Pipz (who is the Pipziest of all).  Clu is heading out after a run, trailing smoke.

Trying to pounce on a P-38J escort as I approach bombers, to clear others.  Morfiend and Ditto are in there on atack runs.  t=2:22

I took off the P-38's aileron and rudder, but didn't put in enough hits to put him down.  He has to maneuver hard out of the way, though.  Ditto, Bueller, MAKAYLA, and BW1stpar are on their way in.

As I close on the main bomber group, I spot a trio formation drop back and decide to go after that, as do several other folks.

I attack the last bomber in the trailing formation, doing a few passes as he maneuvers.

My last run puts cannon hits all down his plane, and he catches fire.  t=2:30

After that, I couldn't catch any more bombers before they hit the no-fly zone.  There were reports of fighting, and I tried to go find enemies, and flew around a lot looking, but couldn't see them.  I patrolled near column 6, but not in it, and found a P-47 up above 30k.  I fought with him a bit, but then a higher P-51B came in, so I dove out hard toward A33.  They didn't catch me.  I ran past A33 and then began to climb.  I heard calls of fighting at A33 on the deck and injured Luftwaffe fighters trying to get to A33, so I reversed and dove for the field.  It was very near end frame (a couple of minutes away), so I had to keep glancing at my watch.  I found a P-47 just exiting the the field.

Landing one cannon round on the P-47, which was all I managed in the fight.  The Thunderbolt was flown very well by, as it turns out, the allied CO, Rapier.  Well flown, my friend! <S>!

I tangled with the P-47 briefly, and a P-51B came in.  I evaded a run from him, then had to get the message out.  I levelled out very briefly and got out a garbled "end hostiblities" (or something like that), then slammed my plane into another evasive, then flew level again enough to get out a more coherent "end of hostilities".

Conclusion

I ended up with 7 B-17 kills, an assist on another B-17, and an assist on a P-38.  Wow, I got very lucky in this one.

Pipz did great with 7 kills, and Oboe got in plenty of action, a couple of assists, and lost only 1 life.

Well done, I/JG 3!

It was great flying with you guys! <S>!
