Brooke in his FW 190A-4 with other members of I/JG3 at 38,000 feet near Cherbourg,
patrolling for enemy bombers. The 190 handles very well at speed, has excellent
roll rate, and has awesome firepower.
Radio calls report B-25's near Brest. Flight A of I/JG3 comes in to help. Brest
airfield, city, and industrial section are visible below left in the picture.
Black smoke plumes show that some B-25's have already dropped on the industrial
section. Many bogies (black dots) below Yoj and rdnk1 show that there are still
aircraft in the area -- probably Luftwaffe fighters battling B-25's.
Brooke overflies Brest and sees B-25J Mitchell's below. Then, he does a split
S to come in on the tail of one.
After the split-S, Brooke does a firing pass on the B-25. The B-25 has taken
damage from others and is already smoking. Red dots are tracers from Brooke's
gunfire. Other B-25's are visible in the area.
A view from the cockpit of Brooke's FW 190A-4 as he fires on the B-25. After
coming in from high altitude, Brooke is doing over 400 knots.
Brooke passes the B-25 at the end of his firing pass. After this, Brooke pulls
up hard and jinks to avoid fire from the B-25's gunners. He still takes some
hits, but none are critical. Other Luftwaffe fighters finish off this B-25 before
Brooke does a 2nd pass.
Brooke attacks another B-25 in the area.
Brooke positioning for another attack on the B-25 in the previous picture, but
briar just finished it off. Brooke gets the kill. The explosion of the B-25
is difficult to see, but it is the brown discolored spot just to the right of
and below briar at the right edge of the picture, midway down the side.
Brooke attacks a third B-25 as it tries to escape north from Brest.
A view after Brooke's firing run. There are many other Luftwaffe fighters on
this hapless B-25, and it does not survive much longer.
After the area is clear of B-25's, Brooke lands at Brest airfield.
Brooke ended part 1, frame 1 with 1 kill (a B-25) and 2 assists (B-25 and P-47), and landed safely.
