The strategic situation before Brooke's launch. The enemy bomber strike group
is south of Nancy, heading east. Brooke's Me 163 is based at Rhein-Main.
Brooke taking off from Rhein-Main in his Me 163 (modelled as a Mig 15).
Brooke gets up to about 35,000 ft. altitude (in case enemy escort is high) and
gets into the sector of the enemy aircraft, hunting for the enemy aircraft formations.
He is one of the first few Luftwaffe aircraft making contact.
After looking around some, Brooke sees the bombers and escorts and vectors over
to scout it out thoroughly.
There is a very large number of P-51D Mustangs up at about 35,000 ft. escorting
B-17G Flying Fortresses. This is a view of just some of the P-51 near the tail
of the attack group.
Brooke gets out a radio report on the location of the bombers and the situation
with the escort. Buff1 and ede are reporting the same.
Another view that better shows the number of P-51 escorts around. All of those
dots (bogies) are P-51's. Since they are all so high and since the Me 163 has
such escellent performance at high altitude, Brooke decides that he'll try to
clear out some of the escort for the FW 190's rather than attack the bomber
stream. As he goes in to attack, one P-51 does land some shells on Brooke's
Me 163 in a headon pass, but the damage seems minimal.
Brooke pours cannon shots into a P-51, which is trailing debris. The P-51 blows
up an instant after this picture was taken, giving Brooke the kill.
Brooke does a pass on another P-51, putting hits into it and causing it to shed
debris and smoke.
A view to the rear as Brooke races past the P-51 he just attacked. The P-51
is trailing smoke and debris.
There is still a very large number of P-51's around, many still at very high
altitude. Brooke tangles with the group, working to get it separated from the
bombers and pushed to a lower altitude.
Brooke puts the shots into another P-51, which is about to blow up, giving Brooke
the kill.
Brooke does an attack run on another P-51, putting cannon rounds into it. It
trails debris and a puff of smoke from a small explosion somewhere on the plane.
Brooke attacks another P-51, landing hits.
A view as Brooke races past the P-51 he just attacked, showing some of the debris
trailing back. The P-51 below Mitty seems to be chasing, but Brooke's Me 163
is too fast.
Brooke attacks another P-51. ARTST, Commanding Officer of the Luftwaffe is below.
With low fuel, Brooke pulls up and out of the fighting. There are still plenty
of P-51's about, and with lots of altitude. The bombers are farther ahead, so
these escorts have been stripped off. However, they are alive and can still
cause trouble for Luftwaffe fighters that enter the area.
Brooke gliding back toward Rhein-Main. Unfortunately, he cut it too close on
the fuel and had to ditch in a field about a mile away from the airbase.
Brooke took off in an Me 163, got 2 kills (P-51's), 1 assist (P-51), and ditched near base.
